Folded Light
An exhibition of new artwork by Steve Tierney13 – 16 February 2026
Opening reception Friday 13th February 2026

Folded Light presents new artworks by Steve Tierney that
explore the human figure through collage. Built from layers of torn paper,
colour, and photographic imagery, the reassembled images transform familiar bodies
into abstract compositions. The figures feel both present and unsettled,
drawing attention to what is shown, what is hidden, and what feels exposed.

The works in Folded Light reflect on how we see ourselves
and others. By cutting and rebuilding the human form, Tierney creates space for
vulnerability, ambiguity, and reflection. Meaning emerges not only from what is
visible, but from what is altered or left incomplete.

Alongside the new works, the exhibition includes a small
selection of earlier pieces, offering an introduction for viewers who are new
to Tierney’s practice.

The Greatest, 2025Collage – printed photographs and colour paper on board50x70cm (framed)

This collage artwork is a portrait of my father, created from three family photographs and layered to evoke memory, strength, and loss. When I was eight, my father introduced me to meditation at evening classes in Scarborough Public School—my first exposure to Buddhism and mindfulness.
A former boxer, he carried both physical strength and a deep inner discipline throughout his life. As dementia slowly took his mind, these early teachings became more profound to me.
Through this artwork, I reflect on his lasting influence and the quiet power of presence he passed on. The fragmented, textured collage mirrors the erosion of memory, while also celebrating the resilience of spirit. This is both a tribute and a reflection on who he was—and what remains.
____________
The artwork was original exhibited as part of a community group exhibition at the Nan-Tien Buddhist Temple south of Wollongong.

A Sonnet by Terrel Hale inspired by the artworkThe sallies of a runaway courage

that is what is called poetic frenzy

and madness driven by the froth to rage

where soul attains its ultimate glory
to submitting beliefs ripped from ancient
opinions and tears along good things and

the rest of universal logic sent

among word pages of divided grand
harmonies of perfectly concordant sounds, an evenness of habits certain

and constant as the principle goal bent

from wisdom’s deliberate winning won
in the softs of inspired textured sound
or sequence that the poem goes round and round.

Jack and I were married at Maroubra Church on 11th April, 1939, with a Nuptial Mass at 8.30 am and had to fast from midnight to be able to go to Holy Communion as that was the law, not even a glass of water, so we were very hungry and thirsty. &#38;nbsp;

There were only 36 guests at the wedding and a light meal followed in a hall at Maroubra Junction.&#38;nbsp; We went to the Hydro-Majestic Hotel in the Blue Mountains for a glorious two week honeymoon. Our first home was a small flat at Coogee, then later a nice flat overlooking the beach at Coogee. Our first daughter Margaret was born one year later and when she was twelve months old we moved to a semi-detached house in Kensington. We were happy in this nice place, though war was on and we knew Jack would be called up at any time. &#38;nbsp;

We were expecting our second child, John when the call-up came, so Jack was worried about leaving us, though he also felt obliged to go, as so many friends and work mates were going. John Edward Tierney was born 30th November 1941 on a Sunday. Jack took me to St. Margaret’s Hospital in Darlinghurst, then took Margaret to stay with Mum at Maroubra and went to visit friends.&#38;nbsp; He didn’t ring the hospital till about 9 o’clock. I had been waiting for him to visit at 7 pm, as John was a quick birth with no long labour like with Margaret. &#38;nbsp;

The bombing of Pearl Harbour took place a week after the birth, which brought America into the war in the Pacific. Margaret was two and John was about six months old when Jack’s call-up eventually came. He spent the first night in the Sydney Showground, the headquarters for recruiting, where thousands of new recruits were crowded into pavilions, just sleeping on the floor on a straw palliasse (a large calico bag filled with straw). He was then detailed to the Artillery and sent to Albury for six months training before going to Liverpool camp in preparation for shipment to New Guinea. I had moved back to Maroubra with the two little children to stay with Mum and Dad hoping to help them and also save money for a home. &#38;nbsp;

Jack came to the home nearly every night for a few weeks, trying to spend as much time as possible before going away.&#38;nbsp; He had to leave home at 5.30 am each morning&#38;nbsp; to be at Liverpool camp in time for roll call. He sailed from Darling Harbour on 10th February, 1943 for Townsville and then for New Guinea. He was at Port Moresby for a while then to Milne Bay for some weeks before going by barge to Lae. What a terrible time they had there living in horrible conditions with lots of rain and mud, strict training and frightening Japanese air raids at night.

		<description>Reflected (Reflejadx)Taller Espacio Alternativo
Oaxaca, MexicoNovember 2018
Reflected (Reflejadx) started out as a personal project I’d been thinking about and developing for a couple of years.
In March of 2018 I teamed up with a photographer, Tanja Bruckner, to create my own original source material, and it first came to life as a small solo exhibition at China Heights Gallery in Sydney, Australia. Later that year, Reflected grew into a large-scale, interactive installation that reimagined the human body and completely transformed the space it was shown in.

The goal was to shake up how we think about representation and beauty in popular culture. Instead of using a traditional female model, I used my own body. The result was a series of huge, cut-up and reassembled photographs that took inspiration from fashion photography but turned it on its head. These artworks, each one about 2 by 3 meters, also challenged the usual way collage is done.

The bigger version of the show was presented at Taller Espacio Alternativo, an experimental art and performance space in Oaxaca, Mexico. The pieces filled the main room, and visitors were invited to walk through them, touch them, and really immerse themselves in the experience. The idea was to make it feel like stepping inside a collage, or even inside a human body.

Steve Tierney is

a mixed media artist and designer working mainly with collage. His artworks are refined and minimal, generally figurative, and made from just a few images sourced from vintage magazines, photo journals, or original photography.

Each of his artworks tells a story, often exploring social issues or personal experiences, shaped by a deep level of thought and self-analysis. His passion for collecting vintage magazines and scavenging for discarded objects, along with his sense of humour, has resulted in a unique aesthetic and vision.

Born in 1976, Steve Tierney grew up in the southern coastal suburbs of Sydney. He studied art and design at Sydney Graphics College and was a professional skateboarder through the 1990’s, at the same time creating artwork for a majority of Australian skateboard companies at the time.

Tierney

spent over a decade living and exhibiting internationally while based in Mexico, where he managed an artist residency and collaborated with local artists in the city of Oaxaca. He recently returned to Australia to settle with his family on the NSW south coast.&#38;nbsp;

A member of the Sydney Collage Society, Steve’s work has been published in international art journals, and he regularly creates commissioned pieces for foundations, not-for-profits, magazines, online editorials, skateboard brands, and album covers. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows across the world, including in the USA, Japan, Mexico, and Italy.
